⚠️ Is Germany’s Ukraine Policy Driven by Strategy — or Poisoned Politics?
On Daniel Davis Deep Dive, Roger Koeppel, the editor-in-chief of Switzerland’s die Weltwoche (@Weltwoche), argues that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz may be using the Ukraine war to bolster his domestic political standing as support for his government weakens.
Koeppel disputes Merz’s claim that Germany is the last line of European defense against Russia, calling the narrative exaggerated and counterproductive. He argues that Berlin’s deepening involvement in the conflict unnecessarily increases tensions with Moscow while avoiding an honest discussion about the risks of escalation. As Koeppel sees it, Germany is acting as a «war party» while ignoring the historical lessons that should make its leaders cautious about confrontation with Russia — and Germany is wholly unwilling to even attempt seeking a genuine diplomatic solution w Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
A sobering and overdue assessment of German politics, the Ukraine war, and the future of European security. Watch the full clip:
